F. Scott Fitzgerald initially struggled with his book. He moved to the French Riviera in May and began writing. His first draft was done in November of 1923, and the book was published in 1925.
The artwork on the cover was done by Francis Cugat. It was finished before the novel was done, so Fitzgerald wrote it into the plot.
