    I wish I could finish this with just pseudo elements. It would be truly progressive-enhancement then. The shades are done with them. I can push in a character for center cover via pseudo elements, but couldn't find a way to position it.

    Although, http://cl.ly/LTiM is quite possible with a single character & CSS :)
